A 17-year-old girl, identified simply as Safiya, has committed suicide in Garin Dau village in Warawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The residents of the village, who spoke to BBC Hausa Service, expressed shock over the incident, saying the late teenage girl was calm and responsible.
According to some locals, the girl might have killed herself over her parent’s plans to force her into a marriage with a man in the state.

However, the parents and other sources in the family countered the allegation, adding that the girl was not through with her secondary education yet not to talk to marrying her off.
The incident was confirmed by the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, noting that an investigation has commenced to ascertain why the deceased hanged herself.
Safiya was a JSS2 student before her sudden death.
