No fewer than 19 people have been confirmed dead in an accident along the Oyo-Ogbomoso expressway in Oyo State.

It was gathered that the accident occurred on Sunday, April 14, 2024.

The incident was confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Public Education Officer, Jonas Agwu.

Agwu said the crash involved two vehicles, a Toyota Hiace Bus loaded from Ibadan en route Sokoto State, and a Toyota Corolla saloon car.

He disclosed that the accident, which occurred at about 07:45 a.m. on the Oyo-Ogbomoso expressway, was due to route violation, referred to in local parlance as ‘One Way’.

The FRSC spokesperson noted that the act was a traffic violation that resulted in a head-on collision and fire outbreak, adding that the crash involved 20 people (all male adults).

Agwu said: “Of this number, 19 persons died, while the only surviving victim was rescued by FRSC operatives with injuries.

“FRSC rescue team that conducted the rescue operations have taken the injured victim to Opabode hospital in Oyo for emergency medical attention.

“The dead bodies have been deposited at Oyo General Hospital morgue.”

Agwu further quoted the Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, as calling on the motorists to avoid all incidences that could lead to road traffic crashes.

Biu also directed sector commanders to step up patrol operations, to address the menace of route violation on the nation’s highways.
