Kiyawa said the remains of the victims have been deposited at the Bichi General Hospital, adding that investigation was going on to ascertain the cause of the incident.

Though it is illegal, but there were hundreds of miners who throng mining sites to eke out a living in the state in search of stones, like blue sapphires.

The state government had banned illegal mining activities due to its effect on the environment such as the degradation and pollution of drinking water.

There are also fears for security concerns that usually accompany such activities due to the presence of all sorts of people.
