Unknown gunmen have reportedly attacked a police checkpoint and killed two officers on duty in Enugu State.
It was gathered that the incident occurred at about 9 am on Thursday at Gariki in Enugu South Local Government Area of the state capital.
It could not be immediately ascertained if the gunmen attacked the MTD police station which is not far from the checkpoint.
Confirming the attack, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said: “There was an attack on policemen on stop-and-search duty this morning, along Agbani Road, close to Enugu/Port-Harcourt Expressway, by yet-to-be-identified hoodlums.
“However, details of the incident are still sketchy.
“The command’s tactical/operational operatives have been mobilised and are on the trail of the miscreants,” Ndukwe said.
The police spokesperson, however, failed to disclose the number of people killed by the gunmen.
