20 students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) and University of Jos (UniJos) kidnapped by gunmen in Benue State on August 15 have regained freedom.
The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Sewuese Anene, confirmed the rescue of the students on Friday night.
The students, who were travelling to Enugu State for their annual Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) convention, were abducted in the Otukpo area of Benue State.
Also abducted was a house officer who accompanied the students on the journey.
Anene, however, declined further details on the rescue efforts.
“The victims have been released. Details will be released tomorrow (Saturday) morning please,” the police spokesperson stated.

Also speaking on the development, the Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said no ransom was paid for the release of the abducted medical students.
Adejobi, in a statement on X on Saturday morning, said: “We confirm the release of our brothers and sisters and some other Nigerians who have been in captivity on Friday 23rd August 2024 in Ntunkon forest, Benue State. Without any ransom paid.
“Contrary to some tweets and unconfirmed stories that some money was paid, no kobo was paid to release them. They were actually rescued tactically and professionally. We commend the security agencies, locals, and ONSA for their commitment and resilience. Thanks to you all. More details soon.”
The students’ release is coming five days after the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, deployed a tactical squad to Benue State and ordered the State Commissioner of Police to relocate to Otukpo.
It was gathered that a combined team of security operatives coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser carried out the operation that ensured freedom for the abducted students.
