The Peoples Democratic Party has called for the immediate resignation and arrest of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, for alleged manipulations and financial impropriety in the CBN, which the PDP said contributed to the collapse of Nigeria’s economy.
The PDP said it rejected the continued stay of Emefiele as CBN Governor after it was confirmed he is a member of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC).
The main opposition party made this known via a communiqué issued by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, at the end of the party’s 96th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday night in Abuja.
The PDP added that the CBN Governor, having been a member of the APC, can no longer be trusted with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) sensitive materials which would ensure free, fair, and credible elections in the country.
The party stated: “NEC restated the call by the party for the immediate resignation, arrest and prosecution of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, for alleged manipulations and financial impropriety in the CBN which contributed to the collapse of our national economy.
“NEC vehemently rejected the continued stay of Mr. Emefiele as CBN Governor after being confirmed as a card-carrying member of the APC.
“The CBN is the custodian and keeper of all INEC sensitive materials used in all elections. Having been confirmed as a member of the APC, Mr. Emefiele, can no longer be trusted with INEC sensitive materials which are key to the guarantee of free, fair and credible elections.

“NEC assures Nigerians that the PDP is resolute in taking very firm legitimate series of action in the march to restore and protect the sanctity of our Central Bank and electoral process,” the communiqué partly read.
The Star had reported that the Chairman of Ward 6 in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nduka Erikpume, confirmed that Emefiele is a full-fledged member of APC.
Erikpume said the CBN Governor registered as a member of the APC in February 2021.
Earlier, three interest groups, the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), Friends of Emefiele, and Emefiele Support Group, on Friday, obtained the Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms of the APC valued at N100 million for Emefiele to run for the 2023 presidency.
In his reaction, Emefiele rejected the APC presidential nominations form bought for him to vie for the presidential ticket of the APC ahead of the 2023 general election.
The CBN Governor, who reacted via a series of tweets on his verified Twitter handle on Saturday, said that, should he decide to contest the 2023 presidential election, he would use his own hard-earned savings from over 35 years of banking leadership to buy his own presidential nomination forms.
He noted that he would make a decision on the calls to contest the next year’s presidential election in a few days, adding that it is a serious decision that requires God’s Divine intervention.
