2023: Ex-Speaker quits APC over Kano governorship race

A former speaker of Kano State House of Assembly and governorship aspirant, Hon. Kabiru Rurum, has quit the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

This is in response to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s reported endorsement of his deputy, Nasiru Gawuna, as his successor to be paired with a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Murtala Garo.

Kano APC crisis: Ganduje steps in, Jibrin ready for parley

The Star reports that the endorsement was made known during a meeting at the Government House on Saturday night.

Hon. Rurum who represents Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya federal constituency is yet to issue formal declaration, but sources in the Government House said he felt he and Kano South senatorial district were being treated with contempt as the last time the zone produced a governor was in 1992.

Rurum’s defection is coming less than 24 hours after a former lawmaker and Director General, Tinubu Support Group, Abdulmumin Jibrin threatened to dump the APC over his grouse with Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

His threat to leave the party drew attention of some party stalwarts in Abuja who are working to reconcile the former lawmaker with the governor.
