Three girls have been confirmed drown in a pond in Buji Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The spokesperson for the Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), ASC Badaruddeen Tijuana, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, August 11, 2024.
Tijuana disclosed that the girls drowned at about 11 a.m. when they went to cut some grass to feed their livestock beside the pond on Saturday, August 10.
Tijuana gave the names of the deceased as 12-year-old Fatima Sule, 12-year-old Nasiya Sale, and 13-year-old Huwaila Sa’adu.
He stated: “The NSCDC personnel operating in the area received a distress call from some members of the Tulla community at about 11:10 a.m. and rushed to the scene with the divisional disaster management officers for a rescue mission.

“Together with the people of the community, they were able to recover the bodies of the three young girls after about 30 minutes of search and rescue operation.”
The NSCDC spokesman noted that the recovered bodies were immediately rushed to the nearest health centre in the area, where they were confirmed dead.
Tijuana added that an investigation revealed that the deceased cut some grass at the same place, where they were drowned.
He stated that the remains of the girls were handed over to their parents and had been buried according to Islamic rites.
Tijuana quoted the NSCDC Commandant in Jigawa State, Muhammad Danjuma, as commiserating with the families of the deceased and urging parents to look after their wards, especially at a time when ponds and rivers were over flooded to avoid such incidents.
