The Chief Judge of Zamfara State, Justice Kulu Aliyu, has released 30 inmates from Gusau Medium Security Prison as part of efforts to decongest correctional centres in the state.
Justice Aliyu freed the inmates while on tour of correctional centres in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, which commenced on Tuesday and ended on Thursday, November 23, 2023.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, the Chief Judge said some of the 30 inmates were released on health grounds, while others were on the failure of the Ministry of Justice and the police to produce their case files, as according to them they misplaced the case files.
She further stated that some of the freed inmates spent more than six months in custody without trial as their files could not be produced.

The Chief Judge stressed that the most dominant cases treated this year were offences which include armed robbery, culpable homicide, kidnapping, misappropriation of funds, and those obtaining money for self-pretence.
According to Aliyu, other cases are rape and theft, among others.
While addressing the freed inmates shortly after their release, Justice Aliyu urged them to shun any act capable of returning them to prison.
He also enjoined them to be useful in society.
