President Bola Tinubu has commended the release of the Kuriga school children in Kaduna State by their abductors.

Tinubu, who emphasised the importance of collaboration between the federal government and states for expected outcomes, especially on matters of security, said schools must be made safe for learning across the country.

The president said this in his reaction to the release of the students of the Government Primary and Secondary School in Kuriga in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, from captivity on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

Tinubu, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, also commended the National Security Adviser (NSA), security agencies, and the Kaduna State Government for the dispatch and diligence with which they handled the situation, noting that incipient urgency, meticulous attention, and tireless dedication are critical to optimal outcomes in cases of mass abductions.

President Tinubu, who equally lauded the release of pupils of a Tsangaya school in Sokoto State, assured Nigerians that his administration is deploying detailed strategies to ensure that “our schools remain safe sanctuaries of learning, not lairs for wanton abductions”.

The Star had reported that Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, announced the release of the abducted students in a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) page in the early hours of Sunday.

Sani added that the students were released unharmed.

It would be recalled that 286 students were abducted by gunmen suspected to be bandits on March 7.

The bandits later demanded N1 billion for the release of the kidnapped students and vowed to kill the victims if the ransom demand was not met in 20 days, effective from the date of the abduction (March 7).

Governor Sani, however, failed to disclose if any ransom was paid for the release of the abducted students.

The governor also did not reveal the number of abducted victims released by the gunmen.
