In less than 24 hours to the Ondo State governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has replaced Olusola Ebiseni with Olorunfemi Festus as the Labour Party (LP) gubernatorial candidate.
INEC announced this in a statement shared on X on Friday, November 15, 2024.
The electoral umpire noted that the replacement of Ebiseni with Festus was in obedience to a judgement of the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
INEC said it was served with the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgement of the Appeal Court which set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
It stated: “The Commission was yesterday (Thursday) 14th November 2024 served with the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgement of the Court of Appeal which set aside the judgement of the Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja Division.
Ondo election: 3 guber candidates withdraw for Aiyedatiwa
“The FHC, in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1105/2024 had on 27th September 2024 ordered the Commission to accept Olusola Ebiseni as the candidate of the Labour Party for the 2024 Ondo State Governorship election.
“However, in the appeal with reference number CA/ABJ/CV/1172/2024 filed by the Labour Party, the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division struck out the judgement of the FHC for lack of jurisdiction.
“In obedience to the court order, the Commission has restored Olorunfemi Ayodele Festus, whose name was first published as the Labour Party candidate for the 2024 Ondo State Governorship election and uploaded same to our website for public information.”
No fewer than 17 political parties were cleared by INEC to participate in the governorship election slated for Saturday, November 16, with 1,793,914 voters set to decide the fate of the candidates.
The incumbent governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, will slug it out with his closest rival, Agboola Ajayi, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other candidates in the gubernatorial election expected to be held across 18 Local Government Areas of Ondo State.
