The Lagos State chapter of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to stop attempts to make President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu, the next governor of the state.
The Lagos PDP made this known via a statement issued by its spokesperson, Hakeem Amode, on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
This comes after some groups, including the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders and Friends of Seyi Tinubu, endorsed Seyi as a potential successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027.
Amode stressed that “Lagos will not serve him”, saying the Lagos State governorship seat is not an inheritance.
“Governorship is not a gift,” he stated, adding that any attempts to impose Seyi as governor would be met with resistance.
Seyi Tinubu: Results, not words, define leadership
The Lagos PDP spokesman noted that many Lagosians did not vote for Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election, saying this was an indication that the people of the state would not support the president’s son for the governorship election in 2027.
The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths has also condemned the idea of Tinubu’s family member taking over the governorship seat, insisting that non-indigenes should not be allowed to govern Lagos State.
Reacting, the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Seye Oladejo, described the comments on the 2027 elections as premature.
“It is too early to be discussing the 2027 elections. We should rally behind the governor and the president now to advance development,” Oladejo said.
