The ancient city of Oyo in Oyo State witnessed a historic moment on Saturday, April 5, 2025, as Oba Abimbola Owoade was crowned as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.

Owoade succeeded the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi who passed away on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83.

The coronation ceremony held at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo was graced by numerous high-profile guests, led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

Others in attendance were traditional rulers, including the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams; among others.

Oba Owoade had earlier received the staff and instrument of office on January 13, 2025, during a ceremony held at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

His ascension followed the successful completion of the traditional 21-day Oro Ipebi rites, which ended on March 29.
