Asisat Oshoala nominated for Ballon d’Or award

Super Falcons and Barcelona striker, Asisat Oshoala, has been nominated for the 2023 Ballon d’Or award.

Oshoala was nominated in the Socrates Award category, which recognises outstanding solidarity actions carried out by football champions.

Her nomination was announced on the Twitter handle of France Football, the organiser of the Ballon d’Or, on Friday, July 7, 2023.

The Barcelona striker is one of five players shortlisted for the award, which was established last year and named after the legendary Brazilian footballer, Socrates.

Other nominees in the category are Vinicius Jnr (Brazil/Real Madrid), Antonio Rudiger (Germany/Real Madrid), Marcus Rashford (England/Manchester United), and Alex Morgan (USA/San Diego Wave).

The nomination acknowledges Oshoala’s remarkable contributions to her community through the creation of Asisat Oshoala Academy.

“The Asisat Oshoala Academy aims to access to its beneficiaries to high quality football training as well as education on life skills.

The organisation’s will is to empower young women through both sport and education, and to turn the beneficiaries into role model for the community and ambassadors of tge values and skills they learnt,” the organiser added.

It noted that the nominees in the categories for the men, women, Yachine Trophy, and Kopa Trophy of the Ballon d’Or award will be unveiled on September 6, 2023.
