Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has donated N100 million to assist the victims of the devastating flooding in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The donation followed Atiku’s visit to Maiduguri where he extended his sympathies to the state government and those affected by the disaster on Sunday, September 15, 2024.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election announced the donation during a visit to Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum at the Government House in Maiduguri.
A statement issued by Atiku’s Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, said: “The Waziri’s generous gesture is a testament to his unwavering dedication to humanitarian efforts.
“The Maiduguri flood, which has displaced an estimated 500,000 individuals and wrought widespread destruction, represents an acute humanitarian emergency.”

Ibe noted that in addition to the donation, Atiku has called upon his network of friends and associates to contribute further to the relief efforts.
“This gesture mirrors Atiku Abubakar’s previous humanitarian initiatives, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he mobilised support from his circle to address urgent needs,” he added.
Ibe quoted Zulum as expressing gratitude for Atiku’s compassionate visit, saying: “The people of Borno deeply appreciate this show of solidarity.”
Upon his arrival at the Maiduguri airport, Atiku, accompanied by family and close associates, was received by the senator representing Borno North, Mohammed Tahir Monguno (SAN), and the senatorial representing Borno Central, Kaka Shehu Lawan (SAN).
Sharing the video of his visit to Zulum at the Government House on his X account, Atiku wrote: “I commiserate with the government and people of Borno State over the catastrophic flooding that led to the tragic loss of lives, destruction of property, and the displacement of hundreds of thousands from their homes.
“You are not alone in this difficult time, and I, on behalf of my family, pledge my full support towards the rebuilding efforts.”
