Bauchi varsity final year student stabbed over girlfriend’s handbag, dies

The Bauchi State Police Command has revealed that a 500-level student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi, Joseph Agbaidu, lost his life while helping his girlfriend to retrieve her handbag from some assailants in the state capital.

The command’s spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, made the disclosure in a statement issued and made available to newsmen in Bauchi on Wednesday.

Wakil stated that Agbaidu was with his girlfriend, a student of Abubakar Tatari Polytechnic (ATAP) in Bauchi, when the assailants snatched her handbag containing her mobile phone.

He said when the deceased tried to retrieve his girlfriend’s bag, they stabbed him on the side of his chest but later died while on admission at the ATBU Teaching Hospital.

The police spokesman stated: “The recent incident occurred on 02/12/2023 where some unknown persons, numbers not ascertained, snatched a handbag containing a mobile phone belonging to a lady one Philomena Ahobee, ‘f’ 28yrs a student of Abubakar Tatari Polytechnic (ATAP) Bauchi, as a result of which her boyfriend Agbaidu Joseph, ‘m’ aged 28yrs of Anguwan Ngas who is a student of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi, tried to help her to retrieve the handbag containing the phone. The assailant(s) stabbed him on the left-side of his chest with a sharp knife.

“The victim was rushed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) Bauchi for treatment but he was certified dead while on admission by a medical doctor.”

The killing of the student had triggered his colleagues to stage a protest at the university gate before they were dispersed by the police which led to the closure of the institution.
