Breaking: INEC seeks prosecution of Adamawa REC over Binani’s declaration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared his readiness to write to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of its Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, over the declaration of the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aishatu Binani, as winner of the governorship election in the state.

INEC made this known via a statement issued after its meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, April 18.

The electoral umpire added that the collation process would resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer for the election.

The statement read: “At its meeting today, 18th April 2023, the Commission discussed matters arising from the Adamawa Governorship election and decided to:

“Write to the Inspector-General of Police for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.

“Request the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the unwholesome behaviour of the REC for further action.

“The collation process shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer.

“Detailed official statement will follow shortly,” INEC stated.

The Star recalls that Yunusa-Ari was summoned to the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Sunday, April 16, after he declared Binani winner of the governorship supplementary election in Adamawa State while the process of results collation from about 10 Local Government Areas was yet to be concluded.

INEC, on Monday, directed Yunusa-Ari to immediately stay away from the state office until further notice.

The commission also ordered its administrative secretary in Adamawa State to take charge of the state office with immediate effect.
