David de Gea wins first-ever EPL Player of the Month award

Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea, has been awarded the English Premier League’s Player of the Month for January.

De Gea became the first goalkeeper to win the award in six years, after Southampton’s shot stopper, Fraser Forster, who bagged the prize in February 2016.

The Manchester United goalkeeper also received the EPL award for the time since he joined the club from Atletico Madrid in June 2011.

De Gea, 31, made 22 saves in four games for the Red Devils in January as he helped the club go move up to the top four in the Premier League table.

The Spanish goalkeeper topped a six-man January shortlist that featured Jarrod Bowen, Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Harrison, Joao Moutinho and James Ward-Prowse.

Earlier on Wednesday, De Gea was also named Manchester United Player of the Month for January.

The January award marked the third time the Spain international received the accolade this season.

A statement released by Manchester United read: “The votes are in! And we can reveal that David De Gea has retained his Manchester United Player of the Month crown, after dominating our poll to determine January’s outstanding Red.

“It means the Spaniard has now claimed the prize across three successive months.

“Our no.1 was the clear favourite in our fan vote, gaining 67 per cent of the vote, ahead of Scott McTominay (12 per cent), Bruno Fernandes (11 per cent) and Anthony Elanga (10 per cent).

“De Gea made five appearances during the first month of 2022 and kept two clean sheets, which was enough to earn him the nod, despite the impressive efforts of McTominay and co,” the club stated.

Meanwhile, Wolves coach, Bruno Lage, has emerged the Manager of the Month after taking three straight victories in January.
