The Department of State Services (DSS) has debunked reports that its operatives invaded the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) headquarters in Abuja and arrested its Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
There were reports on Monday that DSS operatives laid siege to the CBN headquarters in Abuja to arrest Emefiele.
But the Service’s spokesman, Peter Afunanya, in a terse statement made available to The Star on Monday, January 16 stated that there was no truth in the story.
“The attention of the DSS has been drawn to the false news making the round that its operatives invaded the Central Bank of Nigeria and arrested its Governor, today 16/1/23. This is fake news and quite misleading,” Afunanya said.
The Secret police has been making spirited efforts to arrest Emefiele since December 2022.
The Service already is in court to secure order for the arrest over alleged terrorism financing.
Meanwhile, Governor Godwin Emefiele on Monday resumed duties at the CBN.
The apex bank in a statement on Monday January 16, 2023 said Emefiele resumed after a medical break.
The bank’s Director of Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, issued a statement amidst reported arrest of the Governor.
Nwanisobi said: “Mr. Emefiele, who proceeded on leave in December 2022, resumed work today, Monday, January 16, 2023.
“The Governor resumed with renewed vigour to perform his duty ahead of the first Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the year scheduled for January 23 to 24, 2023.”
