Edo deputy gov walks out of event over aides’ entry denial

The deputy governor of Edo State, Phillip Shaibu, has walked out of an event in the state after his aides were denied entry.

Shaibu, in a video shared by Arise Television, was allowed into the venue of the 60th anniversary of the Midwest referendum organised by the Edo State Government on Monday, August 28, 2023, but his aides, including security operatives, were stopped from gaining access.

The embattled deputy governor sought permission for his aides to come with him into the venue but a security operative was seen blocking the way.

Shaibu, who was visibly angry over the incident, later led his aides out of the venue and drove away.

The Star had earlier reported that security details attached to Governor Godwin Obaseki stopped Shaibu from accessing him at a church service to mark the 32nd anniversary of the creation of Edo State on Sunday, August 27, 2023.

The deputy governor made a move to access and greet his principal but as he approached, Obaseki who was seated beside his wife, Betsy, and Charles Aniagwu, the representative of the Delta State Governor, was stopped within two metres of the governor.

Governor Obaseki looked the other way as Shaibu explained himself to the security operative who firmly but in a friendly tone kept the deputy governor away.

Shaibu later returned to his seat as the service continued.

Reacting, the governor stated that the security operatives were doing their job of safeguarding him.
