The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has ordered immediate investigation of alleged bribery allegations imputed to some EFCC officers by popular cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, fondly called Bobrisky, in a viral video circulating across the country.
The EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, made this known in a statement on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.
Bobrisky, an ex-convict, had alleged in the video released by Martins Vincent Otse, well known as VeryDarkMan, that some officers of the EFCC collected N15 million from him (Bobrisky) to drop money laundering charges against him.
Oyewale, however, noted that Olukoyede has constituted a team of investigators to critically look into the allegations.
He stated: “To this end, the Commission hereby invites both Okuneye and Otse to make themselves available at its Lagos Directorate to assist investigators unearth the alleged bribery.
Naira abuse: Bobrisky regains freedom from prison
“The EFCC wishes to assure the public that the allegations would be thoroughly investigated and the result of the findings made public accordingly. The Commission is committed to its core values of integrity, courage, professionalism, and collaboration at all times.”
The Star recalls that Bobrisky regained freedom from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos State on August 5, 2024, after he was sentenced to six months imprisonment over naira abuse.
The controversial celebrity, who was prosecuted by the EFCC, was sentenced to prison by the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.
The presiding judge, Justice Abimbola Awogboro, in a judgement delivered on April 12, 2024, said: “The act of mutilating the naira notes has become a menace, which has continued to damage the image of the country.
“Enough of people mutilating and tampering with our currencies. It has to stop. His will serve as a deterrent to others.”
The judge, therefore, sentenced Bobrisky to six months imprisonment without an option of fine from the date of his remand.
