The Mayor of Goree Island in Senegal, Augustin Senghor, has conferred the title of Honourary Ambassador on the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.
The Mayor explained that the honour is in appreciation of the historic visit of the Nigeria’s First-Class monarch and the efforts of the Emir towards promoting closer relations between Nigeria and Senegal.
Bayero is in Senegal on a weeklong visit.
The Emir had on Tuesday visited the historic Island of Goree.
He travelled to the Island on a Presidential Yatch provided by his host, President Macky Sall.
A statement from the Emir Palace said on arrival, His Highness was received by the Mayor of the Island and retinue officials.
Subsequently, the Emir together with members of his entourage, given a guided tour of the Island where the curator gave an emotionally extensive briefing on the slaves’ station chamber which was established many centuries ago by the Portuguese purposely for shipping of slaves to the Americans and the Caribbean.
At the end of the visit, the Mayor conferred the Honourary Ambassadorial title on the Emir.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Emir of Kano on the conferment on him, the highest honour of the Republic of Senegal, the “National Order of Lion.”
The honour was conferred on the Emir by President Sall at the Presidential Residence in Dakar, in the course of the Emir’s visit to the country.
In a congratulatory message by his media aide, Malam Garba Shehu, on Thursday in Abuja, Buhari said the honour on the Emir was richly deserved.
The Nigerian President commended his Senegalese counterpart for spotting the inherent qualities of the traditional head of the most populous northern city.
The President said the Senegalese honour award upon the Emir was a recognition “for his exceptional services in promoting peace, harmony and the well-being of his people and as well as his promotion of the friendly and strategic partnership between Nigeria and Senegal.”
He, therefore, urged the Emir to continue to build on the good work he had been doing.
