Former Governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala is dead.

He was aged 71.

Though the details of his death were still sketchy, a source said the former governor died in his sleep in the early hours of Wednesday at his Ogbomoso’s residence.

His remains had been moved to the mortuary.

A family source told The Star that the former governor returned from Abuja to Ogbomoso on Tuesday.

“He was full of life until we discovered he was gone this morning,” a source told The Star.

He died exactly one month after his monarch,  Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi, joined his ancestors.

Akala was the apex leader of the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State after the demise of former governor Abiola Ajimobi in 2020.

As a mark of honour for the deceased, Governor Seyi Makinde has directed that flags fly at half -mast in Oyo State.
Makinde said: “I join the good people of Oyo State to mourn the passing of a former Governor of our dear state, Otunba Christopher Alao-Akala, which sad event took place today. May his soul rest in peace and may God grant his family the fortitude to bear this great loss.
“I have directed that flags fly at half-mast in honour of Governor Alao-Akala, our brother, friend and illustrious son of Oyo State.
“His Excellency will be remembered for his contributions to the development of Oyo State as Governor, especially for taking infrastructural development to other zones of the state outside Ibadan.”
