FCCPC evacuates weevil rice, shuts Abuja supermarket

The officials of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) are currently evacuating some bags of rice filled with weevils from all branches of 4U supermarket in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The affected products, 5kg and 10kg of Caprice and stallion rice which were produced in August 2022 and October 2022, respectively, were expected to expire in 2027.

The price displayed on the weevil-laden 10kg bag of rice was N19,000.

The Acting Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, Adamu Abdullahi, who led the raid on Thursday, April 18, 2024, said he was surprised that Caprice and stallion rice were still stocked and sold in the supermarket years after the companies stopped production.

Obi to FG: Set up task force to address reoccurring grid collapse

Condemning the “obnoxious practices” being undertaken by the management of the supermarket, the FCCPC boss noted that the integrity of products being sold at 4U supermarket could no longer be guaranteed thereby exposing consumers to unsafe products.

Following deceptive actions by the management of the supermarket to hide the affected rice at its headquarters in Abuja, the FCCPC is currently activating the process of sealing up branches of 4U for allegedly duping and misleading Nigerians.
