FUTA students protest robbery attacks in Akure

Scores of students of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in the Ondo State capital, on Friday, February 9, 2024, protested incessant robbery attacks on them.

The students, who barricaded the ever-busy Akure-Ilesa expressway on Friday, decried the robbery attacks on them off the campus of the institution.

The students said they staged a protest to call on the government, FUTA management, and the security agencies to act to protect them against what they described as incessant robbery attacks.

The protest was confirmed by the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami.

FUTA students protest tuition fee hike

Odunlami said police operatives have been deployed to the area to ensure the protest was not hijacked by hoodlums.

The students had, in January 2024, protested against the decision of the university management to increase tuition fees.

The students, who staged the protest in front of the university’s gate in Akure, said the management increased the fees by over 300 per cent.

They prevented human and vehicular movement from entering the campus, insisting that the university management must reverse the hike in the tuition fee.

The university management later postponed the resumption of students for the 2023/2024 academic session.
