Guinness World Records: We’ll verify Hilda Baci’s cooking as new record soon

The Guinness World Records says it would verify the longest cooking time set by Nigerian chef, Hilda Effiong Bassey, popularly known as Hilda Baci, as a new record soon.

Hilda Baci, who set up a four-day ‘cook-a-thon’ at Amore Gardens in the Lekki area of Lagos State on Thursday, May 11, hit 87 hours 50 minutes to surpass the Guinness World Record on Monday, May 15.

After breaking the record, the 27-year-old restaurateur decided to go a step further by setting a new record of 100 hours.

The current record for the world’s longest cooking marathon is held by Lata Tondon who completed the task in 87 hours, 45 minutes, and 00 secs in Rewa, India, in 2019.

Speaking on the development via a statement issued on Tuesday, May 16, the Guinness World Records said its officials would review Hilda Baci’s cooking marathon before declaring the record official.

The statement read: “A Nigerian chef has been cooking up a storm in her kitchen in the hopes of landing a world record.

“Hilda Bassey, known on social media as Hilda Baci, has been dominating headlines around the world ever since she launched her cooking marathon.

“She’s hoping to snap up the record title for longest cooking marathon (individual) which currently belongs to Lata Tondon (India) with a time of 87 hr 45 min.

“Hilda began cooking on Thursday and continued through to Monday, reportedly whipping up 55 recipes and more than 100 meals in a whopping 100-hour stint.

“Officials on our records team look forward to reviewing the evidence and hope to be able to verify Hilda’s efforts as a new record very soon.”

The statement further quoted a Guinness World Records spokesperson as saying: “We are aware of the record attempt and are looking forward to receiving the evidence for our Records Management Team to review, before we can confirm the record is official.”

Hilda Baci had explained she was taking on the challenge to highlight Nigerian cuisine.

“Nigerian cuisine is the best out there. The more recipes are propagated, the more people will be willing to try it. Nigerian food is such comfort food,” she told CNN.
