Gunmen attack police patrol team, kill officer in Ebonyi

Gunmen have attacked police operatives on patrol along Ngbo-Effium Road in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, told journalists in Abakaliki, the state capital, on Friday, February 2, 2024, that a policeman was killed by the gunmen.

Ukandu disclosed that the gunmen attacked the police officers on patrol using an Ash-coloured Toyota Sienna without a registration number.

Ukandu said the operatives engaged the assailants in gun duel at about 11 a.m. on Thursday which resulted in one of the policemen fatally wounded while one officer is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

He said the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Augustina Ogbodo, after the incident, dispatched tactical teams of the command to the scene to trail the gunmen.

The police spokesman added: “Meanwhile, calm and normalcy have been restored to the area.

“The CP is using this medium to call on well-meaning individuals in the state to avail the Command with useful information that can lead to the arrest of the fleeing hoodlums.”

Ukandu further assured the command’s commitment to the protection of lives and property in the state.
