Gunmen kidnap naval officer, 7 others in Akwa Ibom

Gunmen have abducted an officer of the Nigerian Navy and seven others in Ibaka Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

It was gathered that the naval officer and others were kidnapped by the gunmen at the Classic Point Hotel in Ibaka, where they went for relaxation, on Monday, July 15, 2024.

Confirming the incident, the Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, said the state Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, led a team of police officers to the community shortly after he was briefed about the abduction.

John said: “The Commissioner of Police has already led a team of security personnel to the community.

Navy rescues 8 trafficked victims, 2 drowning fishermen

“I can assure you that with that visit by the Commissioner of Police and other strategic approaches being taken, normalcy will return.”

The police spokesman added that the gunmen took the victims to an unknown destination.

Also speaking on the incident, the Navy Base Information Officer, Sub.-Lt. Nasiru Omar, said he had yet to receive any official information about the abduction.

“I don’t know anything about it yet. If the incident is not official, I cannot say anything about it,” Omar said.
