‘He served Nigeria actively’: EFCC mourns ex-chairman Lamorde

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has mourned the death of its former Chairman Ibrahim Lamorde.

The Star had reported that Lamorde died at the weekend in Egypt where he had gone for medical treatment.

The former EFCC boss died at the age of 61.

Speaking on his demise, the anti-graft agency, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, on Sunday, May 26, 2024, said Lamorde served the country actively.

Oyewale noted that the EFCC received the news of Morde’s death with shock.

He stated: “Lamorde, pioneer Director of Operations and third substantive Chairman of the EFCC between February 15, 2012, and November 9, 2015, served the nation actively as a focused and gallant anti-graft fighter.

“He will be sorely missed both at the EFCC and the nation at large.

“The Commission prays for the repose of his soul and comfort for his family, the EFCC and the entire nation.”

Lamorde retired as Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in 2021 after a distinguished career in the police.

He enlisted in the Nigerian Police Force in 1986.

A native of Mubi in Adamawa State, Lamorde graduated from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria in 1984 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology.

When the EFCC was established in 2003, the former DIG was appointed its first Director of Operations.

He briefly served as Acting Chairman in early 2008 before Farida Waziri’s appointment. Lamorde returned to the EFCC in December 2010 as Director of Operations and once again took on the role of Acting Chairman in November 2011.

His confirmation as the EFCC Chairman came in February 2012, a role he fulfilled until 2015 when he was succeeded by Ibrahim Magu under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
