Horse rider kills 70-year-old man in Jigawa

A 70-year-old man, Umar Hassan, has been confirmed dead after he was knocked down by a horse rider in the Ringim area of Jigawa State.

Confirming the incident on Sunday, the Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawal Jiisu, said the man, a cyclist, was hit by a 25-year-old horse rider, Muhammed Mustapha, after he lost control of the horse on Saturday, June 10, 2023.

Jiisu disclosed that the 70-year-old cyclist sustained varying degrees of injuries and fractures on his left leg and shoulder.

He stated that a team of policemen rushed to the scene and conveyed the victim to Ringim General Hospital.

The police spokesperson added that the victim was later confirmed dead at the hospital.

Jiisu said the corpse was handed over to his relatives for burial, while the rider was arrested and detained by police.

“The suspect will be charged to court upon the completion of investigation at the State CID Dutse,” Jiisu noted.

The police spokesman, however, warned parents to caution their children to desist from illegal horse riding across Jigawa State, noting that the command would clamp down on any violators.
