Senate President Godswill Akpabio has announced the composition and leadership of standing committees.
Senator Solomon Adeola (APC-Ogun) is the chairman of the powerful Appropriations Committee.
The immediate past Senate President Ahmad Lawan heads the Defence committee.
Former Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA-Abia) gets the chairmanship of the Power Committee while Senator Abdulaziz Yari (APC-Zamfara) heads the highly-sought after Water Committee.
Yari, the former governor of Zamfara State, contested the Senate Presidency with Akpabio. He lost the contest.
Akpabio announced the composition of the standing committees shortly before midnight in plenary on Monday, August 7, 2023.
The announcement was made shortly after lawmakers reconvened from their short break after confirmation of the ministerial nominees.
Akpabio named the following senators among others as chairmen of committees.
Banking, Insurance and other financial institutions committee has Abiru Adetokunbo, while Abdulaziz Yar’Adua was made Chairman of the INEC committee.
Ecology and Climatic Change committee has former Governor Seriake Dickson, while Aminu Tambuwal was named chairman of the Housing committee.
Interior committee has Adams Oshiomole as chairman, while Public Accounts is to be chaired by Aliyu Wada.
Governor appoints former deputy governor as SSG
Aviation committee has Buhari Abdulfatai, while Capital Market is being chaired by Osita Izunaso.
Works committee has Patrick Ndubueze, FERMA has Usain Babangida, while Musa Sani was named Finance committee.
Customs, Exercise and Tariff committee has Isa Jubril, Cooperation Integration in Africa and NEPAD has Yau ‘Shaibu, Culture and Tourism has Elisa Abboh, while Diaspora and NGO committee has Victor Umeh as Chairman.
Former Governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo, heads Drugs and Narcotic committee.
Gas committee is to be Chaired by Jaribe Agom, Judiciary has Mohammed Monguno, while Women Affairs Committee is to be shaired by
Ireti Kingibe.
Land Transport has former minister and onetime governor of Kebbi State, Adamu Aleiro, as chairman.
The Senate President urged lawmakers to approach the Senate Leader for their appointment letters.
Meanwhile, the Senate has adjourned plenary to September 26 for the annual recess.
