‘I’m alive’: Yakubu Gowon debunks death rumour

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), has denied the rumours making the rounds on social media that he was dead, saying he is still alive.

Gowon said this via a statement issued by his media aide, Adeyeye Ajayi, on Monday, October 9, 2023.

“I am still around and well. I am not in a hurry to go anywhere,” Ajayi quoted the former Head of State as saying.

Also speaking, the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 election in Delta State, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, refuted the rumours that the former Head of State was dead.

The former Minister of State for Education, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Orusi Kenneth, on Monday, described the purported death as the “handiwork of mischief makers”.

Gbagi disclosed that Gowon is alive and presently in London, the United Kingdom.

He said: “I, Gbagi, just spoke with him. I hereby refute the rumour of the death of my friend, General Yakubu Gowon.

“He has communicated to Nigerians that he is still much around, hale and hearty. Gowon, is alive.”

Gowon was Nigeria’s military Head of State between August 1966 and July 1975.
