APC leaders move to stop senators from impeaching Buhari

Leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have commenced moves to stop the impeachment threat against President Muhammadu Buhari by the opposition senators, especially those elected on the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the worsening insecurity in the country.

Some senators from opposition political parties, including the PDP, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and some APC members were reported to have expressed frustration over the nation’s security problems, giving the President a six-week deadline to address the issue or face impeachment proceedings.

Some senators from APC and PDP were said to have fixed a meeting for Sunday on the next action if there is no improvement in the nation’s security within six weeks.

It was gathered that some aggrieved APC senators, who lost return tickets, supported the move by their PDP colleagues to impeach the President.

Reacting to the development, the Federal Government described the move to impeach Buhari by some senators at plenary on Wednesday as unnecessary and ridiculous.

The Star had reported that the Presidency further stated that the refusal of Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, to entertain the motion to impeach President Buhari by the senators was appropriate and correct, saying the lawmakers were “headline grabbers”.

However, it was gathered that the impeachment plot by the opposition senators and House of Representatives members was part of moves to outsmart APC in the 2023 general election.

Credible sources disclosed that the APC leaders were shocked that PDP senators overturned the decision of the Executive Session of the Senate.

It was further learnt that the leaders of the ruling party took preliminary stock of the situation and decided to halt further moves to embarrass the administration of President Buhari.

A source, who spoke in confidence, disclosed that some APC leaders have already met in Abuja to nip the impeachment threat in the bud.

“It is a fluke because it was the stock in trade of PDP when it was in power.

“We have made up our minds that we won’t allow PDP to ambush our administration. We know that they do not have the numbers, but they can make disturbing noise.

“I know that before the end of the recess of the National Assembly, the threat will be over,” The Nation quoted the source as saying.

Giving insights into what transpired on Wednesday in the Senate, the source added: “The PDP Senators derailed from the consensus reached at the Senate Executive Session because of sheer politics.

“Senators Gabriel Suswam and Opeyemi Bamidele foresaw the development when they cautioned their colleagues.

“But they did not listen because they have their agenda cut out for them by some forces in their party. We know those behind the impeachment threat.

“It was all politics by PDP to present a false narrative to Nigerians ahead of 2023 poll.

“Was PDP not in power when insurgency became the order of the day? What did they do?

“By the time Nigerians see the factsheet, they will know that this administration is really addressing the nation’s security challenges.”

However, it was gathered that some PDP senators and a few aggrieved federal lawmakers in APC have agreed to meet on Sunday in Abuja.

“We will meet to decide on what to do if there is no improvement in the nation’s security architecture within six weeks.

“We will keep you posted, but we will place premium on national interest,” an opposition senator disclosed.
