Jigawa establishes study centre for PWDs

The Jigawa State Government through its Agency for Mass Education has established a study centre for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the state to improve their literacy.

The centre located in Aujara Village of Jahun Local Government would be under its Literacy-by-Radio programme.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Abbas Abubakar, disclosed this in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital on Tuesday.

Abubakar said the centre has already enrolled 25 PWDs as pioneers of the programme.

The Literacy-by-Radio programme was introduced by the state government in 2021 for adult learners in order to boost the state’s literacy level.

Abubakar, however, said the agency decided to include persons with disabilities, vulnerable, and disadvantaged people.

He stated that each of the new learners, comprising 20 men and five women was given a solar-powered radio to participate in the programme.

According to him, more centres for learning for PWDs would be open for such category of people across the state.

He said: “The gesture is part of the state government commitment on inclusive provision of education to all categories of people, including people with disabilities, vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the state.

“The programme is aimed at eradicating illiteracy in the state, particularly among adults in rural areas.”

The programme was introduced to complement the efforts of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education (NMEC) in boosting mass literacy in Jigawa State.
