Kuje prison attack: Police arrest fleeing inmate in Niger

The operatives of the Niger State Police Command have arrested one of the inmates who escaped from the Kuje Maximum Custodial Centre in Abuja which was attacked last Tuesday.

This was disclosed via a statement issued on Monday by the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun.

Abiodun stated that the fleeing inmate, identified as Kazeem Murtala, aged 54, was arrested by police on patrol around General Hospital Suleja, Niger State.

The police spokesperson stated: “In view of the recent attack at Kuje Custodial Center and escape of some inmates, on 9/07/2022, Police operatives attached to ‘A’ Div Suleja while on patrol around general hospital Suleja down to Bakasi area of Suleja and based on credible intelligence, the police operatives stormed an identified compound and arrested one Kazeem Murtala aged 54yrs.”

He added that the arrested inmate, during interrogation, confessed that he escaped from Kuje correctional centre during Tuesday’s attack.

Abiodun further stated that the inmate was serving a jail term after conviction for an offence he committed, adding that the prisoner has been in the custody for the past two years.

The police spokesman noted that the inmate has been transferred to the correctional centre.

The Federal Government, on Friday, declared wanted the inmates who escaped from the Kuje correctional centre.

Terrorists had on Tuesday night launched an attack on the facility and freed no fewer than 879 inmates.

The Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorist group had claimed responsibility for the attack.
