Missing FUOYE student found dead in varsity premises

A 200-level student of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Modupe Atanda, who was declared missing by the university on Tuesday, September 5, has been found dead.

It was gathered that the body of Atanda, a student in the Nursing Department, was found in a shallow grave behind the Faculty of Pharmacy building within the premises of the university.

Some students of the university disclosed that the last time they saw her was on Monday when she was heading to her faculty to read.

Confirming the incident via a statement issued on Thursday, September 7, 2023, the FUOYE Registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim, said an investigation into the killing of the student was ongoing.

Ibrahim stated: “It will be recalled that earlier today, the management had made public the disturbing development about the deceased and assured that investigation was ongoing as to unravel her whereabouts.

“But current information reaching the security outfit of the university has disclosed that the said student is dead.

“While the university management condoles with the family of the deceased and the generality of the university community, particularly our dear students, an investigation is ongoing with the security agencies with a view to getting to the root of the sad development and arresting the perpetrators.

“We, therefore, appeal to students and all other stakeholders to remain calm.”

He assured the parents of the deceased that every person connected to the death of their daughter would be arrested and be made to face the wrath of the law.

Also speaking on the incident, the Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sunday Abutu, in a statement, said the State Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation into the cause of the student’s death.

The police spokesperson disclosed that the body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy, adding that 10 suspects have been arrested by the police.

Abutu noted: “While appealing to everyone to be calm, the Commissioner vows that the Command will do everything possible to unearth the identity of the perpetrator(s) and ensure they are made to face the full wrath of the law.

“The Command enjoins anyone with useful information concerning the ugly incident to visit Oye Divisional Police Headquarters, Oye-Ekiti, or State CIID.

“Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy while 10 suspects are currently in custody undergoing investigation.”
