The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the death of a mother and her child, following the collapse of a three-storey building in Lagos State on Sunday night.

The Star had reported the collapse of the building located at 32, Ibadan Street in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State.

The incident was disclosed via a tweet on the Twitter handle of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

However, the Zonal Coordinator South-West, NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, on Monday morning, confirmed two persons dead, while 23 people were rescued.

Farinloye said the recovered bodies were those of a mother and her child, while the rescued persons included seven children and 16 adults.

“Nine of those rescued alive have been treated and discharged.

“They returned to the scene, but have been  taken away for proper custody while psycho-social and post trauma counselling are being arranged for them by the Nigerian Red Cross,” he disclosed.

Farinloye added that rescue operations were still ongoing at the site.

Also speaking on the incident, the Lagos State Emergency Management (LASEMA) said the three-storey building collapsed at about 10:56pm on Sunday.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, made the disclosure via a situation report on Monday morning.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the collapsed building comprised rooms and parlour.

“On arrival at the incident scene, an old 3 storey building comprising rooms and parlour was discovered to have collapsed.

“Further information gathered revealed that the incident occurred at about 10.56pm with as yet undetermined number of people trapped. Search and rescue ongoing

“Twenty rescued alive out of the victims rescued, two sustained severe injuries and have been taken to LASUTH for further treatment,” he stated.
