A Kaduna-based musician, Mr. Jamilu Saidu (popularly known as Danmasukudi in the music industry), has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, over harassment by the state Commissioner of Police.
In the petition dated April 15, 2024, a copy made available to The Star, the musician accused the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Musa Yusuf Garba, of being instigated by Governor Uba Sani, to hunt, trail and intimidate him and his immediate family “without any notice of any offence known to law.”
The petition, which was written by Barr. Ajayi Olatunji Olowo on behalf Saidu, noted that at the point of securing bail for the artiste’s family members, it was learnt that Governor Sani reportedly found some tracks in the latest album of the musician distasteful.
The petition states: “We have been briefed that following the recent music label of Our Client titled ‘In Bazaka lyaba Kasauka’, which was released to the public domain on 10th April, 2024, the Police Force Kaduna State Command under the leadership of Commissioner of Police (CP) Musa Yusuf Garba has been hunting, trailing and intimidating our client and his immediate family without any notice of any offence known to law.
“We have been further briefed that on Friday, 12th April, 2024 after Our Client had travelled out of Kaduna on musical business engagement, the Police had besieged the residence of Our Client at Rigachikun in Kaduna city and requested his wife and other family members present to produce him even as there was no warrant of arrest and or notice of any alleged offence in vogue.
“The Police thereof whisked away two brothers-in-law of our client: Messrs Mukailu Shehu Ajiya; and Abdulrahaman Shehu Ajiya. In addition, the Police impounded the vehicle of our client: a red Ford SUV with registration number (KADUNA) GWT 292 AA, which he had left in the custody of the brothers-in-Law.
“It was at the point of securing the administrative bail of the two brothers-in-law of our client in the evening of Saturday, 13th April, 2024 that it was revealed that our client was being trailed by the Police at the behest of the sitting Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani. The Governor had reportedly found some tracks in the latest album of our client distasteful.”
The lawyer told IGP Egbetokun that the Police Force cannot be used by politicians to settle personal scores.
El-Rufai to Tinubu: Sack appointees who fail to deliver
According to Barr. Olowo, “We most humbly draw the attention of your good office to the imperative settled position of the law that the Police Force cannot be used to settle civil disputes, nay personal scores among the citizens wherein no crime has been committed as in the instant situation.
“In the light of the foregoing, we respectfully request your good self to call the CP Kaduna State Police Command to order to desist from further being used by politicians to settle personal scores, particularly as currently being done to please the sitting Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani, at whose instance Our Client and his family are being petrified and harassed with the apparatus of the Nigeria Police Force.
“In the event that the Commissioner of Police Kaduna State Command, CP Musa Yusuf Garba, does not stop immediately the continual persecution, trailing, intimidation, harassment of Our Client and his family and release his vehicle (including personal effects therein) unconditionally, we have been mandated to take necessary further steps within the due process of the law.
“While looking forward to your prompt action(s) in calling the Commissioner of Police Kaduna State to order on the aforestated issue, we offer you the assurances of our kind regards.”
