The operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested eight suspected bandits terrorising farmers in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

This was disclosed via a statement issued and made available to The Star by the NDLEA Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi.

Babafemi stated that the suspected bandits were arrested on Friday after the NDLEA operatives combed the Ala forest for a drug kingpin in the area.

According to him, the arrested suspects include 47-year-old Austin Dickson, who is the gang leader; Sunday Adekunle, 31; Kayode Oluwaseun, 29; Kolawole Kazeem, 33; Oladimeji Makinde, 37; Emeka Charles, 46; Ojo Oluwadare, 40; and Lanre Oluwajana, 44.

The NDLEA spokesperson added that the items recovered from the suspects include 25 bags of cannabis sativa weighing 296kgs; 6 explosive devices; 6 cartridges; 4 motorcycles, and assorted charms used in terrorising farmers in the forest.

Speaking on the incident, the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the anti-drug agency officers just as he charged them and their compatriots across Nigeria to intensify the heat on drug cartels in the country while balancing their efforts on supply reduction with drug demand reduction activities.
