NDLEA arrests vigilante commander, woman for drug dealing

The operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested the Commander of Arewa Association Vigilantes in Edo State, Ibrahim Sani, for allegedly dealing in illicit drugs.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, on Sunday, February 25, 2024.

Babafemi revealed that the anti-narcotic officers, on Tuesday, February 20, raided a drug joint in Benin, the Edo State capital, where they arrested a 24-year-old sales girl, Jessica Destiny, and recovered assorted illicit drugs.

He said a follow-up operation on Wednesday, February 21, led to the arrest of the owner of the joint, 36-year-old Sani who is the Commander of Arewa Association Vigilantes in the area.

The NDLEA spokesman added that a 25-year-old woman, Zara Mele, was arrested with quantities of cocaine and heroin at Baga checkpoint in Borno State on Tuesday, February 20.

He disclosed that two suspects – Usman Shuaibu, 26, and Mohammed Lawan, 22 – were also nabbed with quantities of cocaine and heroin in the Meri and Babban Layi areas of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on February 20.

Babafemi noted that a consignment of 179kg cannabis was recovered by the NDLEA operatives at Badagry Waterside in Lagos on Wednesday, February 21, adding that a 67-year-old man, Rafiu Ogunro, was apprehended on Thursday at Magbon, Ogun State, with 57kg cannabis, 2,700 pills of tramadol, and 231 bottles of Codeine syrup, weighing 2.31 litres.

He, therefore, quoted the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), as commending the anti-narcotic officers for their balanced efforts in the past week and equally applauding their counterparts across the country for intensifying their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy lectures thus creating parity between their drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction activities.
