NDLEA intercepts drugs imported from Canada, nabs suspects

The operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted 532 parcels of Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, weighing 265.25kg and imported from Montreal in Canada at Tincan seaport Lagos State.

The illicit drugs in a black Toyota Sienna bus, one of the three vehicles in a container coming from Canada, were intercepted by the NDLEA officers at the seaport on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.

The NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, August 11.

Babafemi said the seizure was made during a joint examination with the officers of the Nigeria Customs Service and other stakeholders.

Babafemi said the NDLEA operatives, on Thursday, August 8, recorded another seizure of 75 parcels of the same substance weighing 37.5kg in a container from Canada.

He noted that the officers of the anti-drug agency, on Thursday, also arrested 49-year-old Joseph Peter with 425 compressed blocks of cannabis sativa weighing 291.200kg in his Toyota Camry car in Adamawa State.

The NDLEA spokesman said Peter claimed he was bringing the consignment from Edo State to deliver in Yola, Adamawa State.

He added that two suspects, 50-year-old Adekunle Sunday Adebayo and 35-year-old Yahaya Mamuda, were arrested with 29.5kg of cannabis in the Gadar Tamburawa area of Kano State on Tuesday, August 6.

Babafemi further disclosed that the NDLEA operatives, on Sunday, August 4, recovered 1,169 kilograms of cannabis from a bus along Orchid Road in the Ajah area of Lagos.

He stated that 1,230.00kg of cannabis was destroyed on three hectares of farmland at Ikeje forest in Edimogo village, Igalamela/Odolu Local Government Area of Kogi State on Friday, August 9, by NDLEA officers supported by the troops of the Nigerian Army, adding that the owner, 40-year-old Danjuma Maji, was arrested.

Commending the anti-narcotic officers for the arrests and seizures, the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Marwa (Rtd), urged them to continue with their current balanced approach to drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts.
