The operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted 636,600 bottles of codeine-based syrup worth N4,456,200,000 at the Port Harcourt Port Complex, Onne in Rivers State.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi made this known in a statement on Sunday, December 15, 2024.
Babafemi noted that the illicit drugs were intercepted in shipments from India on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, December 13.
He said the seizures were made during a joint examination of four containers by NDLEA officers, the operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service, and other security agencies at the port following processed credible intelligence on the shipments.
Babafemi added that the NDLEA continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation activities in schools, worship centres, workplaces, and communities, among others in the past week.

The NDLEA spokesman listed the activities to include WADA sensitisation lecture to students and staff of City Comprehensive College, Ogidi, Anambra State; Government Secondary School, Toungo, Adamawa State; Bonny Camp Primary School, Victoria Island, Lagos State; and Government Junior Secondary School, Yarganji, Kano State.
Babafemi stated that the Oyo State Command of the anti-drug agency delivered WADA enlightenment lecture to leaders, elders, youths, and residents of Tapa community, among others.
Commending the anti-narcotic officers for the seizure, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), stated that the operational successes should show the drug barons and cartels that the agency has the capacity and intelligence network to track their movements and their consignments before getting to Nigeria.
Marwa said they will continue to lose heavily if they fail to back down on the criminal trade.
