A 17-year-old student, Emmanuela Ilok, has been awarded a scholarship to study Software Engineering at some universities in the United States.
The universities include Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Yale University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and Columbia University.
Education activist and CEO of Educare, Alex Onyia, disclosed this in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, May 26, 2024.
Onyia said Ilok was awarded the country’s best in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education in Nigeria by the British Council, adding that the student developed a software that uses Machine Learning to detect breast cancer in women, with 91 per cent detection accuracy.

He noted: “Emmanuela Ilok was awarded the country best in IGCSE in Nigeria by British Council. She also got full scholarship to study Software Engineering at Stanford, MIT, Yale, UPenn, Princeton, and Columbia University.
“She built a software that uses Machine Learning to detect breast cancer women and so far it has 91% detection accuracy.
“I spent over an hour listening to her today and I can tell you that we have a superstar in her.
“We have many hidden Emmanuela’s in Nigeria and we need to discover and support them. It’s time for Nigeria to shine!”
