The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has suspended four of its National Assembly members for alleged anti-party activities.

The Kano NNPP Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, announced the suspension while addressing newsmen in Kano on Monday, February 24, 2025.

The suspended lawmakers represent Kano South, Rano/Kibiya, Dala Federal, and Rogo/Karaye Federal Constituency of Kano State.

Dungurawa named the suspended lawmakers as Kawu Sumaila, Ali Gini, Sani Rogo, and Kabiru Rurum.

“These members were elected under the NNPP platform but have recently been acting contrary to the party’s wishes, beliefs and values,” he said.

Dungurawa said the suspended members were given complementary tickets during the party elections but began to work against the party’s interests after being elected.

He cited a recent event where Sumaila inaugurated projects at his university in Sumaila without inviting party members as an indication of the anti-party activities.

Dungurawa stated that a committee would be set up to investigate the issue and address it.

Dungurawa said there was still room for dialogue, adding that if their relationship with the party improved, they could be readmitted into the fold.

The latest development comes amidst reports of internal crisis within the NNPP in Kano State with some members allegedly feeling marginalised by the party’s leadership.

Kano emirship tussle: Bayero heads to Supreme Court

Speaking on the suspension, Rurum said he rejected his suspension from the Kano NNPP.

Rurum said his suspension was baseless and in  contempt of court, stressing that he remained a member of the party.

The lawmaker stated that he and his other suspended colleagues belonged to a different NNPP faction.

He accused the Kano NNPP leadership of defying legal rulings, stating that they were not legitimate party leaders.

Rurum cited a court judgement that dismissed their claims and maintained that they took him to an Abia High Court, adding that the court was yet to rule on the matter.

He alleged that the party’s leadership, including its national leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, was invited to Senator Kawu Sumaila’s, one of the affected lawmakers, daughter’s wedding but they chose not to attend.

Rurum dismissed the suspension as meaningless, stating that his faction operated independently.

He emphasised that the suspension only applied to the faction that issued it, as his group was not affiliated to them.
