‘No food, nowhere to sleep’: Super Eagles players stranded at Libya airport

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been left stranded at Abraq International Airport in Libya, ahead of the team’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights.

It was gathered that the Super Eagles players and officials were stranded at the airport after arriving in Libya on Sunday evening.

The players and officials had departed Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, on Sunday morning for Libya, ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Mediterranean Knights.

The Super Eagles defeated Libya 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium last Friday on matchday three of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

Both nations are set to meet again on matchday four slated for Tuesday.

A video released by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) showed the Super Eagles players and officials trying to resolve the issue at the Libyan airport.

The airport officials were also seen preventing Nigeria’s contingent access to their destination for the upcoming match, leaving them stranded at the airport.

Speaking on the incident via his X account on Monday morning, Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface said they had been stranded at the Libyan airport for about 13 hours.

“Been at the airport for almost 13 hours no food no wifi nowhere to sleep. African we can do better,” Boniface wrote.
