NSCDC arrests quack doctor over pregnant woman’s death in Osun

The Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a quack doctor, Oladiti Saheed, after delivering a pregnant woman of baby which led to her death in the state.

The NSCDC said 32-year-old Saheed had been parading himself as a medical doctor without the required qualifications for the past six years.

The NSCDC Commandant in Osun State, Dr Akintayo Adaralewa, disclosed this while parading the suspect in Osogbo, the state capital, on Thursday, May 2, 2024.

Adaralewa said the quack doctor, whose highest qualification was a Secondary School Certificate, allegedly attended to the victim during labour in his hospital which led to her death.

He disclosed that the victim, who was nine months and three weeks pregnant, visited the suspect’s hospital located at Ororuwo town in Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State on April 15.

The NSCDC boss said the suspect, in his confessional statement, said the pregnant woman visited his hospital because she could not continue ante-natal at her previous hospital due to a misunderstanding with her husband.

Adaralewa noted that Saheed attended to the victim and told her to come back when she started feeling signs of labour.

He said: “On April 18, the victim fell into labour and was taken to the hospital of the suspect where she delivered a baby.

“The victim thereafter developed complications and was later rushed to a nearby hospital; painfully, she was pronounced dead on arrival.”

Adaralewa said a discreet investigation revealed that the fake doctor also engaged in the training of people to become a quack doctor with the payment of N5,000.

He said the self-acclaimed doctor was not registered by the Nigerian Medical Association (MDA) and “did not employ the service of any registered medical personnel to work in the so-called hospital”.

Adaralewa further stated that the suspect would face the full wrath of the law upon the conclusion of investigations.

Speaking, Saheed told newsmen that he had attended to many pregnant women in the past six years, adding that a quack doctor trained him.

He also admitted that six other unqualified staff were working with him, saying he usually charges N30,000 per delivery.

On his part, the NMA Chairman in Osun State, Dr Adedapo Adetoye, said that it was pathetic that there were still many quack doctors operating in the country.

Adetoye, who was represented by the NMA treasurer, Dr Ayodeji Ogungbemi, commended the NSCDC for the arrest.
