One dies, many injured in Abia rival group clash

One person has been confirmed dead while many others were injured in a rival groups clash in Aku, Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Abia State.

The Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, who confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, disclosed that rival groups clashed when the community was celebrating its Odo Masquerade Festival at about 4 p.m. on Monday.

Ndukwe stated that the incident led to the shooting to death of one male victim, while many others, including police operatives deployed to restore normalcy in the area, sustained injuries.

He said one male suspect was arrested, noting that a firearm was recovered from him in connection with the clash.

The police spokesman added: “Normalcy has been restored in the community and the Commissioner of Police has ordered the deployment of more police operatives in the community.

“The CP also ordered for an investigation into the case and bringing the perpetrators to book.”

Ndukwe quoted the police commissioner as urging the residents of the area to be law-abiding and cooperate with the police to bring lasting peace to the community.
