Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, says the state government would in January 2024 commence the collection of land use charges to boost the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
Oyebanji said this during 2023 service of nine Lessons and Carols held at the Obafemi Awolowo Civic and Convention Centre in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, on Wednesday.
The governor said the property tax would not in any way be a serious burden to the residents of the state, noting that it would be progressive.
He, however, called for the cooperation and collaboration of all stakeholders on the scheme in order for the government to continue to meet its obligations to the citizens.
Governor Oyebanji added that the property tax would be progressive and based on the type and cost of property of an individual.
Oyebanji said: “I just want to plead with Ekiti people that by next year, we are going to start with land use charges in Ekiti State.

“If government must meet its obligations, we must raise money, which I am sure will not bring any burden to anyone.
“We are going to do it in a way and manner that it is going to be progressive and we are starting in January.”
Speaking on the celebration of Christmas, the governor appealed to wealthy individuals in the state to assist the less privileged families around them in the spirit of the season.
He urged those who may have planned to publish congratulatory messages in national dailies or present him with bithday gifts on December 2 to rather present such monies and gifts to orphanages and children in special schools.
Oyebanji said this is what will give him joy on his birthday.
Other dignitaries present at the event included traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil servants, among others.
