Following the order of the Benue State High Court restraining the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, from parading himself as National Chairman of the opposition party, the Deputy National Chairman (North), Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum has assumed office.
Damagum is now the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, pending the determination of the case in court.
The National Working Committee (NWC) on Tuesday, March 28, resolved that Damagum should hold forte as a law-abiding party.
The PDP in Igyorov Council Ward, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue had on March 24 suspended Ayu over anti-party activities.
“We observed with utmost dismay that Iyorchia Ayu who is the National Chairman of PDP worked against the success of the party in Igyorov Council Ward.
“It is on record that, he has also failed to pay his Annual Subscription Fees as provided under Section 8 Subsection 9 of the constitution of PDP 2017 (As Amended).
“Further investigation also revealed that, he did not vote during the: Governorship and State Assembly Elections held on March 18, 2023,” the statement suspending Ayu had said.
However, Ayu described his suspension as an exercise in futility.
Ayu alleged that the so-called suspension letter was written by an illiterate, and only given to the coerced members to sign somewhere in Makurdi.
