The operatives of the Anambra State Police Command alongside the state vigilante officers have arrested nine suspects for their alleged involvement in the murder of a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Justice Azuka.

Azuka, a member representing Onitsha North Constituency 1 in the Anambra Assembly, was abducted on December 24, 2024, in Onitsha.

The lawmaker’s decomposing body was discovered on the Second Niger Bridge by a combined security team including the police and vigilante on Thursday, February 6, 2025.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, February 7, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, disclosed that nine suspects have been arrested in connection with the lawmaker’s killing.

Itam added that two pump action guns were recovered from the suspects.

The police commissioner said one of the suspects sustained a gunshot injury in his leg during a gun duel with the police operatives.

He listed the arrested suspects to include 30-year-old Ugochukwu Onuorah, 20-year-old Ikemefuna Ossai, 27-year-old Ikenna Orugu, 19-year-old Chibuike Obiefuna, 19-year-old Chinonso Olisa, 21-year-old Chinedu Okoli, 25-year-old David Ojini, and 20-year-old Peter Sunday with a big tattoo inscription of ‘No peace 4 d Government’ on his chest.

Itam further disclosed that police operatives also arrested one Chidiebere Nwosu, a kidnap suspect in Uruagu and Nnewi areas of Anambra State.

Itam stated that the police neutralised some of Nwosu’s gang members who were involved in the attack of police officers attached to the Rapid Response Squad after a successful arrest on October 3, 2024.

“We have also neutralised more than 100 notorious criminals and successfully destroyed many criminal camps in Ufuma, Eziowelle, Achalla, Ogbaru, and many other places in Anambra State,” he added.
